[HWPL] The 1st HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp in Korea

[HWPL]

[HWPL] The 1st HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp in Korea

HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light. Chairperson: Man Hee Lee) reported that, alongside IPYG (International Peace Youth Group), it hosted its HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp for the first time in Korea from June 22nd-23rd under the title 'HWPL Religious Youth Peace Camp for the Peaceful Unification of the Korean Peninsula' to raise youth awareness of religious conflicts and wars at Ulsan Hyanggyo (Confucian school) and Shimkye Temple in Gyeongju.

Participants experienced Korean traditional culture such as traditional Korean etiquette, tea ceremony and folk games to learn the culture of virtues, righteousness, courtesy and wisdom.

Moreover, they attended a WARP (World Alliance of Religions' Peace) Office meeting - one of HWPL's main initiatives - held at Shimkye Temple in Gyeongju. A panel of Buddhist, Christian, Confucian and Cheondoist speakers discussed about a world of peace and the role of a religious leader.

On June 23rd, participants learned about the Buddhist culture, beginning with a Buddhist service at 5am and a lecture on Buddhism by Monk Geosan who was on the Buddhist panel at the WARP Office meeting on the 22nd. A quiz program under the title "Mission Challenge to Achieve Unification" was given to underline that one must 'move' and 'work' to achieve world peace and unification of the Korean peninsular.

As a member of HWPL Supporters One, I think that this program is as significant as the daily public school curriculum given the many ongoing conflicts and wars in Korea and the world. Young people must learn to understand and tolerate each other beyond race, religion, sex, nationality and ideology. This camp was the first of its kind but I hope more and more students and youth will join HWPL's Religious Peace Youth Camp in the future. They will become messengers and advocates for peace who bring world peace faster and sooner. I really hope so:)

The remains of Taebong state found in Cheorwon 1100 years ago couldn't be excavated because it is in the middle of DMZ.

Mr. Ho Suh said: "Borderline cities will be centers of South-North Korean exchange and cooperation, and it will develop into 'Borderline Peace Prosperity Belt' which will be the foundation of the Korean peninsular's peaceful prosperous community."

At the press conference for the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the DPCW - held prior to the main event - Chairperson Man Hee Lee explained the purpose of carrying out this global campaign for the DPCW : "If previous international declarations (which allow war) were perfect, we wouldn't need to announce a new one (DPCW). Now everyone has to become an advocate of peace transcending borders, race and religion to fulfill the reunification of the Korean peninsular and cessation of war, which is the periodical duty of this generation."

Dear President Moon and Chairperson Kim

Greetings, Mr. President and Mr. Chairperson of South and North Korea.

I'm a young man who lives in South Korea, working as a freelancer and actively running a blog about world peace and food as a member of HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light, Chairperson: Man Hee Lee) Supporters One.

I was not the kind of person who was interested in diplomacy and security in the Korean peninsula or in world peace, but just someone interested in personal success, money and 'living happily ever after'. Now you might be wondering why this person is writing this letter to you.

A few years ago, I was a staff sergeant working within the regiment of an infantry division with the responsibility of defending the border between South and North Korea, which we call 'GOP (General Outpost)' and DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). I had to experience so many tragic incidents that happened in the army and the cruel reality of the Korean peninsula.

Military weapons and armaments, which are supposed to protect us and the people of Korea, killed my fellow soldiers both accidentally and deliberately. These weapons were often used by people, hostile to others, to get rid of people or groups that they hated in the army. Missiles and rockets were aimed to the North from the South, and also from the South to the North to kill people who were once brothers and sisters. Korea had been one country till the 1950s, more than 7000 years since its existence. I asked myself 'Why did Korea have to be divided by war? Why do so many young adults have to sacrifice their lives in the army? What is this for?' No weapon or military force was helping make world peace but rather causing continuous conflicts and victims around the world.

Many times in the army, I was often afraid imagining my fellow soldiers and I dying from gunshots or being annihilated by missiles or bombs, along with the grimace of our families and loved ones who would have been in deep pain and sorrow.

DMZ, South Korea

After I finished my duty in the army, I started my life as a freelancer but didn't stop thinking about the reunification of Korea and world peace. One day, I came across an active peace group which established a peace agreement that ceased the Catholic-Muslim civil war in Mindanao, Philippines. This organisation turned out to be HWPL (which I now work for as a supporter).

Soon after, I heard that HWPL and Mr. Man Hee Lee had proclaimed the DPCW - 'Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War' - to end wars, conflict and military acts around the world. It has been drafted by prevalent international global experts to achieve world peace, and consists of 10 articles and 38 clauses covering 'Demilitarization', 'Reduction and prohibition of weapons manufacturing', 'Conflict resolution' and 'Spreading of peace culture'.

Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War
HWPL has been striving to introduce and enact the DPCW at the UN as a legally-binding international law with agreement from world leaders. If the DPCW is enacted at the UN, it will put the following articles into effect:

Article 1 - Prohibition of threat or use of force

Article 2- Reduce war potential and re-purpose weapons to benefit humanity

Article 6 - Settle international disputes through peaceful means

Article 9 - Promote peaceful coexistence amongst religious and ethnic groups

Article 10 - Spread a culture of peace

The DPCW will certainly guide humanity and global society towards stopping wars and violence, and resolve conflicts through peaceful means. It means no more men, women or youth will become victims of war and violence. What's more, wars will no longer ruin humanity and our world. Our children and future generations will learn how to maintain world peace through peaceful means. This must be the greatest legacy we can leave them.

Mr. Moon and Mr. Kim. As a proud citizen of Korea and a proud member of HWPL Supporters One, I strongly urge you to read the information about HWPL and the DPCW. No previous UN declaration or law has been able to cease wars and conflict, but Mr. Man Hee Lee and HWPL peace advocates proved that they can do it in Mindanao, Philippines. I have to tell you that HWPL's DPCW is the only answer that to resolving global wars and conflicts which no one else could settle.

The DPCW will soon be introduced to the UN and enacted as a legally-binding law within the global community. It needs your support and signature in order to be approved as new international law. I, again, strongly appeal to you, to sign it for world peace and for future generations, as other world leaders have done.

Any leader who doesn't sign the DPCW will not expose their desire for world peace, but for war, and our future descendants will remember their leader as someone who wanted war for personal gain.

I truly hope you make a wise decision for yourself, for us and for people all over the world :)

We can make our dream come true through the DPCW.

Thank you for reading my letter.

Sincerely,

Jerry Kim

[HWPL] HWPL Ulsan branch Joins the 100th Anniversary of the March First Independence Movement

[HWPL]

[HWPL] HWPL Ulsan branch Joins the 100th Anniversary of the March First Independence Movement

A sculpted copper plate depicting a scene from the 'Korean Declaration of Independence' on the 1st March 1919.

Centennial Anniversary event of 3.1 Independence Day at Gwanghwamun square on the 1st March 2019

3.1 Independence Movement Day is a day that celebrates the 'Korea Declaration of Independence' that happened across Korea in 1919 to restore the country's national sovereignty. Every Korean - including man, woman, student and elder of every gender, social class  and religion - participated in every city to protest against the Japanese colonial occupation that had subjugated Korea through military force and an unjust treaty.

Koreans everywhere shouted 'Long Live Korea Independence!' as they held Korean flags. The Japanese colonial government, who felt threatened by this peaceful unarmed movement, repressed Koreans through military force and violence, even though they hadn't committed any violent actions.

Nowadays, the 1st of March is a national holiday commemorating and honoring people who participated in the movement and fought against the Japanese colonial occupiers. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of their movement :)

To celebrate the 3.1 Independence Movement, a marathon event was hosted in Ulsan. Participants from HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light) Ulsan branch took part in the event to celebrate 3.1 Independence Day.

700 members of HWPL participated in the event as athletes and volunteers. The event was hosted by Korean Track-and-Field Athletes. HWPL's volunteers provided pre-event performances with Korean traditional instruments and cheered on the runners.

In particular, 30 HWPL marathoners dressed up as independence fighters, chanting 'Long Live Korean Independence!' and 'We are One!' to energize the event.

An HWPL Ulsan Branch representative said, "All members participated in the marathon with one heart, desiring the reunification of Korea and honoring the 100th anniversary of the March First Independence Movement wearing 'Peace and Restoration of Light' hairbands. We will keep contributing to local society with active volunteer work."

[Food] Ramen (라면, Korean Style Instant Ramen)

[Food]

[Food] Ramen (라면, Korean Style Instant Ramen)

Maybe I have told you once before (or not :P), I love rainy days. It's always comfortable and cozy to have a hot spicy ramen and a bowl of rice for supper on such a day. Perhaps I could go out and find any fine Chinese restaurant for a bowl of Zzambbong (Spicy noodle soup that is sold in Chinese restaurants in Korea) instead of ramen, but I decided to make an instant ramen.

I slowly walked to my kitchen and looked for any ramen that might be in the cupboard. I love hot and spicy ramen soup. It fills my body with warm energy and you can feel it twice as much when eaten on a cold day...

I worked in the Korean Army for 5 years before becoming a freelancer. Well...being a soldier in Korea makes you hungry (it doesn't mean Korean soldiers are financially poor or deficient, you would understand what I mean if you joined the Korean Army). Whatever the weather (sunny, rainy, snowy, cloudy, day or night) you work in the Army - drills, training, exercise, office work, being on-guard, patrolling...I remember my colleagues and I were always tired and hungry. We understood we had to be on duty to protect and keep the peace of our country from any foreign threats. As a Korean male, we have to do it whether you like it or not, unless you are physically or mentally unhealthy.

Yeah....it snowed 3-4 meters. I was one of the 'snow-cleaners' too. I had never seen that much snow in my life until then.

I remember the heavy snowy winter season while I was in the Army. Korea experienced its heaviest snow on record in 95 years...and I was there, near the border of South and North Korea - the DMZ (De-Militarized Zone). I was a paramedic at the headquarters of one battalion near the DMZ and got one call from a platoon base which was a bit far away from the headquarters.

Common instant noodle supply for the Korean Army. Any Korean man in the Army loves this cup-noodle, like I do :)

Ring ring....Ring ring....

"Hello, it's medical corps."

"Sir, it's 00 base, sir. We've got an injured soldier during snow removal, sir."

"Okay, tell me what happened, soldier."

"He accidentally hacked his right shin (bone of leg) with a pickax when he was trying to break frozen snow."

"....Oh..my....poor buddy.....how's his condition now? any bleeding and swelling? can he stand up?"

"No blood, but his leg is swelling so fast. He can't stand up by himself sir."
-Aarrgghhhh! Careful, guys!- (I could hear that poor guy was screaming via phone)

"Okay, lay him down on any stretcher and warm him with a blanket. Tell your platoon leader that we will be there as soon as possible."

I reported the patient to my army surgeon and the battalion commander quickly and picked our medical tool box with the medics on my team. But...

"Sir, how do we get there though? All roads in the area are out of access because of the snow," one soldier asked me.

Hm...I know that it takes like 40 minutes with the military ambulance to the post...then....

"Then we have to walk on foot. Don't we? Take the sleigh-type stretcher? large splint and...."

My boss (army surgeon) snapped. So the four of us had to walk to the post where the patient was. I remember we took off from HQ at 2 pm and it was almost 4pm when we arrived. He was lucky that it was just a simple fracture, otherwise we would have to call for a medevac. It was a long and hard 'walk' on a snowy mountain on a snowy day carrying all the gear for him - a very unique experience if I weren't in the Army (Ahaha...). Anyway, we safely sent him to a military hospital for greater medical attention and had to walk back home....all the way again :(

A ramen with sliced rice cake and dumplings

After that 'journey' rescuing a soldier who accidentally hacked his leg, we were exhausted, but luckily one friendly staff sergeant who worked in the kitchen of the mess hall, cooked hot-spicy special ramen with dumplings, rice cakes, pork and kimchi, particularly for us.

Oh, we were like 'hallelujah praise the Lord' though we didn't practice any religion at all. Even 5 years later now, I can say that was the best ramen I had ever tasted.

Countless variety of Korean-style ramen

Today, I cook the same ramen with the same recipe that the sergeant cooked for us in the mess hall on that day, but I can't make the same ramen that I tasted. It's such a shame. I'm certain that the ramen on that snowy day was as good as the hardship we endured on that day.

It is now raining heavily (fortunately it doesn't heap up like snow does), so I opened the window a little to listen to the raindrops while I enjoy my ramen :) The sound of raindrops will soothe my lonely heart for sure as I reminisce on my Army days.

I just put this image of cup-noodle because it is one of my favorite ramen. LOL.

Bon appétit!

[IPYG] PEACE TALK - Discussion for Reunification of the Korean peninsula

[IPYG]

[IPYG] PEACE TALK - Discussion for Reunification of the Korean peninsula

IPYG (International Peace Youth Group) asked a question to young adults of South Korea.

'What do you think about the reunification of Korea? What can you do?'

Young adults from South Korea and North Korea (who are North Korean escapees) participated in the 4th Peace Talk event entitled 'Won't you go for reunification?' by IPYG in Seoul to discuss and suggest answers to this question.

http://www.thegolftimes.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=38234 / Reporter Jungho Moon / the Golf Times / 23.12.2018
The chairman of the Eastern Culture Institute, Mr. Sangman Lee, said the following during his congratulatory speech for IPYG: "Young adults are the hope of humanity, power for historical development and core of public prosperity."

Ms. Jinkyung Bae, the lecturer from the Ministry of Reunification of Republic of Korea, helped the participators to think about their perception towards the reunification and suggested what young adults in Korea can do for it to build a bond of sympathy among them.

The participants actively discussed the questions and they signed 'signature in support of the reunification of the Korean peninsula'. IPYG's 'PEACE TALK' event has been going on since 2015 based on the 'Declaration of Reunification of the Country' by Mr. Man Hee Lee of HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light).

Writer's Comment : I'd like to have a talk about reunification of the Korean peninsula with young adults from North Korea too :) I really wonder what they think about it and the reunification policies of the current president of Korea.

Reporter Sanghwan Hahm, Newsis Incheon Branch

Greetings, family of peace :)

Today, I bring you a short article from IWPG's Incheon branch. IWPG, the International Women's Peace Group working for world peace and reunification of the Korean peninsula, visited the offices of the Geumgangsan Unification Art Group in Incheon.

IWPG's Official Website

IWPG's main initiatives are aimed at spreading a culture of peace and supporting the peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula. One of IWPG’s main initiatives is the close exchange of culture and the arts between countries and its peoples so that they can work together to spread peace and work towards reunification.

The Geumgangsan Unification Art Group is an organization that consists of North Korean culture and North Korean art expert defectors.

IWPG and Geumgangsan Unification Art Group Sign M.O.U. / 28th December 2018 / Reporter Sanghwan Hahm / Newsis, Korea

That day, they agreed on :

- Culture and arts exchange regarding reunification and peace
- Promotion of and participation in a peaceful event
- Exchange and provision of peace education
- Planning of a peace arts concert

Mrs. Misuk Lim, IWPG Incheon branch manager, said :

"We will make more opportunities to talk and understand one another through culture and the arts in order to overcome cultural differences and spread a culture of peace. We will constantly work for real peace work that women can do for the peaceful reunification of Korea."

IWPG and Geumgangsan Unification Art Group Sign M.O.U. / 28th December 2018 / Reporter Sanghwan Hahm / Newsis, Korea

Mrs. Ahyoung Kim, head of Geumgangsan Unification Art Group, said :

"I find it very significant and meaningful that we can work hand-in-hand with IWPG, which is working for the peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula and towards world peace, with a common resolution and hope. We will actively cooperate to host concerts and events to declare world peace through an exchange of inter-Korean culture and arts."

Writer's comment : It is really wonderful to see an M.O.U. for a better future for Korea between these two groups. I think that the first thing to do for reunification is to have an exchange in tourism, culture and transportation etc. between the two Koreas. The more the number of visits and exchanges, the faster reunification and world peace will come. I really hope reunification can come true soon :)

[Food] Makguksu (막국수, Cold Buckwheat Noodle)

[Food]

[Food] Makguksu (막국수, Cold Buckwheat Noodle)

Mr. Roh’s hometown is Pyeongyang, North Korea, but now he lives in Abai (meaning 'Father' in N.Korean dialect) - a village of Sokcho city in South Korea. He has been running a N.Korean food restaurant since 1955 in the village of Abai. Well, he is one of my grandfather’s friends; that is how I got to know him when I visited his restaurant with my grandpa as a little kid. He was a very good friend of my grandfather, sharing a long friendship, and he cried as if he had lost his mom when my grandpa passed away.

What I really like about him is that he is the hidden grandmaster of Makguksu (막국수, Cold Buckwheat Noodle) in Korea who can cook Makguksu from raw buckwheat to its complete dish.

Today, I have come to enjoy his great Makguksu for a long while. His Makguksu is very simple but not easy to make, and needs some toughness and tenderness to turn hard buckwheat into powder and then buckwheat dough. He first grinds all buckwheat with a grinding machine, and then takes the powder to his noodle workshop beside his restaurant.

Buckwheat flowers. Buckwheat is very well-known to Koreans because of the novel 'At the bloom of buckwheat' by the famous novelist Hyo-Seok Lee. Hyo-Seok Lee likened buckwheat flowers to swarms of stars at night :)

An image from the novel 'At the bloom of buckwheat'

Buckwheat. Buckwheat has been planted and grown in Korea since the 7-8th centuries. Wheat was a very rare ingredient so Koreans rather used buckwheat for cooking :)

"Papa Roh! How's everything? Any good news from the National Red Cross?"

"Good...good...yeah, the red cross guys sent me a good letter yesterday..haha.."

Mr. Roh grinned with wrinkles round his eyes. He looked happier than last time I saw him.

"Now you can finally ask your family in N.Korea about the secret recipe of Makguksu and its Dongchimi (동치미, Cold white radish kimchi), right? haha!"

I hugged him as I hugged my grandpa when he was alive.

"Shut up, my mom must have already died some decades ago...maybe my brother and sister will tell me for sure. What do you want to have today?"

"Makguksu with Dongchimi and steamed pork please, sir."

Dongchimi (동치미). Makguksu is originally buckwheat noodle in cold Dongchimi soup :)

"Mr. Roh. Can I ask you something? I don't know why I haven't asked you this so far"

"What is that, young man?"

"Why did you start making Makguksu? Grandpa once told me that you were a farmer in N.Korea before the Korean War."

"Yeah...you are right. I was a farmer before I joined the Korean War.."

He took out buckwheat dough from his kitchen and started to press a bunch of noodles out of the noodle machine. I can see thick steam from boiling buckwheat noodle with the smell of buckwheat :)

White Kimchi and chopped sweet-sour radish. Typical Makguksu banchan (side dish).

Sliced steamed pork and chopped spicy radish. They are usually eaten with Makguksu in Korea.

"But why Makguksu? Is that your favorite menu?"

"It was my mom's best menu."

Mr. Roh answered with sweat on his forehead. Soon, a large bowl of Makguksu and sliced steamed pork came to the table.

"In North Korea, we used to eat cold Makguksu in winter...my dad usually asked my mom to bring a bowl of Dongchimi from crocks at the front yard and he pressed buckwheat noodle out of his noodle machine at the kitchen. Then they throw buckwheat noodle into a bowl of Dongchimi, that's Makguksu."

Actually, Makguksu means 'A noodle that has just been made'. 'Mak' means 'Just' and 'Guksu' means 'Noodle' in Korean.

"Oh....you must miss your parents and their Makguksu."

"Yeah...I miss my mom's Dongchimi and dad's buckwheat noodle...haha..."

He started his talk quietly as he sat in front of me with a smile.

"..........One day.....long time ago, when I wore younger man's clothes....it was a very peaceful day before they conscripted me into the N.Korean Army..."

"I never thought you were conscripted by the N.Korean Army, Mr. Roh. I thought you were a refugee from N.Korea..."

"Oh, well. I don't like to talk about it much because I hate the communist army. I'm never proud of it. Anyway, that's not the point. I thought I would just go for army training for 3 or 4 weeks so I was thinking about eating Makguksu after completing it. On that day, I left my home, and mom asked me 'What do you want to have after training?' and I answered her 'Your Makguksu, mom'."

Buckwheat noodle

Dongchimi soup

Original Makguksu that has been eaten in N.Korea might look like this: just noodles and Dongchimi soup :)
"But....the Korean War broke out as history tells."

"Yeah....(sniffle).....that was the last time I ever saw my family in my life. The N.Korean Army invaded S.Korea after a few days and I fought against S.Korea and the U.N.'s Army. However, thank God, I became a prisoner of war in S.Korea and survived....but I couldn't ever return to my hometown .....and couldn't taste her Makguksu either...ever..."

I also 'quietly' swallow Makguksu with cold soup as I wait for him to continue his story.

"Later, I settled down in Sokcho where I could be closest to N.Korea, where I could go faster than anyone when the day of reunification comes....I missed my family's Makguksu so much, it is unforgettable...how can I forget...? I still remember the whole recipe.. and that's why I started Makguksu restaurant..."

He wiped tears from his cheeks. Hm....I began to feel sorry that I pushed his 'tear' button. I didn't want to sink into a sad mood with him...;;

"Uhm, Mr. Roh, when is the day of inter-Korean separated family reunion?"

"Yes, reunion! Haha, next month! The red cross guys told me that my sister and brother are still alive...."

Phew, now he is in a happy mood. I didn't know that Mr.Roh has this sad story.

"Then you can complete your original Makguksu as you had eaten when you were a kid."

"Yeah, I hope they still remember mom's recipe...haha.."

There is a calendar on the wall of his restaurant, and I can see a big red circle on the day of inter-Korean reunion next month. That day must be the day that Mr.Roh will meet his N.Korean family for the first and last time in his life.

Mool Makguksu (Original Makguksu)

Bibim Makguksu (Makguksu with spicy sauce)

"I'm leaving Mr. Roh. Thank you for your story and for Makguksu: please tell me more about your family when I visit you next month...I look forward to eating your Makguksu again."

He nodded with a big grin.

"Come again, young man. I will let you taste my perfect Makguksu, haha.."

"Yeah, please let me taste it..."

Instant Makguksu noodle

I’ve heard from the news that there are still millions of separated families in North and South Korea who haven't met since the Korean War. I hope Korea will be reunited again soon and all families will see their lost members again :)

Bon appétit!
