[Food] Jwipo (Dried Filefish Fillet, 쥐포)

File Fish / Leather Fish

Jwipo (Dried filefish fillet, 쥐포) is a typical Korean dried seafood which is usually eaten as a light snack alongside liquor or alone. Jwipo is made of jwichi fillet, which is called file fish or leather fish in western culture.

Today the snack jwipo is as cheap or as expensive as file fish is valued among fishermen in Korea. The population of leather fish was very high in the olden days, but fishermen caught them to make them into jwipo to export them to Japan (which is considered the origins of jwipo) in 1960. Before 1960, file fish was treated as fish of 'no value' so fishermen usually extracted oil out of it for lamps in fishing ships.

Leather Fish / File Fish

Since 1960, Koreans started to recognize jwipo's tastiness as a snack, then it became a typical and popular seafood snack in Korea. At the beginning of its production in Korea, fishermen used 100% leather fish fillet, but it became so expensive because of the decline of the leather fish population in the Korean peninsula. So these days, jwipo is not made of 100% jwipo fillet but it's still tasty.

Packed jwipo

Jwipo is usually roasted or grilled on an iron net to be served, but can be eaten without heating. Grilled jwipo is very soft, crispy, chewy, savory and sweet and this is why Koreans love grilled jwipo. It can be cooked as a side dish after undergoing sweet and spicy Korean-style seasonings such as soy sauce, chili powder, sugar or sesame oil.

If you are looking for an exotic, marine snack for your drink tonight, how about jwipo? It will sweeten up your time as much as it will your palate :)

[HWPL] HWPL's 21st ~ 22nd Peace Tour: Declaration of 2nd Draft of 'DPCW' - the Answer for World Peace!

HWPL Chairman Man-hee Lee gave closing remarks at the Youth Model United Nations Convention at Oxford University, London, on November 15th 2015.

Chairman Man-hee Lee received a plaque of appreciation from Mayor Roberto at the unveiling ceremony of the HWPL Monument held in Santa Tecla, La Libertad, El Salvador, on November 10th 2015.

The powerful message of peace by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) and its Chairman Man-hee Lee, who worked tirelessly through an intense schedule, became a great example to the global village.

In particular, on the 21st~25th tour, Chairman Lee announced the second draft of the Declaration of Peace and the Cessation of War (DPCW), and reaffirmed HWPL's global status during a speech at the world-renowned Oxford University.

During the peace tour, Chairman Lee was invited by presidents, global human rights leaders, jurists and universities to express the necessity for the 'enactment of an international law for the cessation of war', which gained their active support. As such, Chairman Lee's world peace tour bore fruit that drove the global movement for peace forward.

Chairman Man-hee Lee held an unveiling ceremony for the ‘HWPL Peace Academy’ signboard with President Mar Elias on December 2nd 2015.

In order to pass on a legacy of eternal peace to future generations, Chairman Lee expanded full-scale peace education operations on to an international level. On this tour, 214 elementary, middle and high schools, and universities, including the university alma mater of the President of the Philippines, signed an MOU for the implementation of peace education, which became the standard text for peace education.

These striking achievements drew the attention of the global community. The cessation of war and world peace, which seemed impossible to achieve through the human mind, became a reality through the activities of Chairman Lee.

The 21st~25th Peace Tour ▲21st: LA, El Salvador, London, UK (Nov 7th~Nov 17th, 2015) ▲22nd: Albania, Kosovo, Israel, Palestine (Dec. 2015) ▲23rd: India (Dec 19th~23rd 2015) ▲24th: Mindanao, Philippines (Jan. 23rd-30th 2016) ▲ 25th: New York and Los Angeles, USA (April 29th - May 10th 2016).

The first stop on the 21st peace tour was the Republic of El Salvador in Central America, which is classified as one of the most dangerous countries in the world. On his second visit in two years to the country, Chairman Lee was invited to a peace event hosted by the government of El Salvador. The Republic of El Salvador hosted the “Unveiling Ceremony of the Peace Monument of the Universal Assembly” in Santa Tecla, attended by Chairman Lee. The Peace Monument of the Universal Assembly consists of the four flags of El Salvador, South Korea, Santa Tecla, and HWPL. This symbolizes the establishment of peace in Santa Tecla through an alliance with HWPL and between the two countries.

After the unveiling of the Peace Monument, about 1,000 people from Santa Tecla who wanted peace held a peace walk.

Chairman Man-hee Lee delivered a presentation at the ‘Light of Peace Development Conference’ held in Cerritos, Los Angeles, USA on November 10th 2015.

After three meetings with the HWPL International Law Peace Committee in London, England, they presented the 'Second draft of the DPCW' containing 12 provisions, including a ban on the sale of arms. The second draft was established while the world was still reeling from shock in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris, France.

The HWPL International Law Peace Committee presented the 2nd draft of the International Law Convention at the Conference Hall in London on November 12th 2015

Chairman Lee, who presided over the meeting, said, “World peace will not be achieved unless this international law for the cessation of war is enacted. If international law is enacted, countries will not be able to easily commit criminal acts of war and armed conflict.”

Afterwards, Chairman Lee attended the ‘International Model United Nations Conference’ at Oxford University, a prestigious private British institution, to present the mission of peace and invite youth to assume the role of a watchdog for the cessation of war and achievement of peace.

[Food] Yongbongtang (Carp/Softshell Turtle and Chicken Soup, 용봉탕)

No one knows when Koreans first cooked yongbongtang (Carp/Softshell Turtle and Chicken Soup, 용봉탕), though the common belief is that it was written in a book and song in 19th century Korea. Given the evidence within 19th century books and songs, food historians in Korea estimate that yongbongtang was first cooked in the latter period of the Chosun dynasty by the royal court and affluent families.

The Chinese character 'Yong(龍)' means 'dragon', and 'bong(鳳)' means 'phoenix', because Koreans likened carp and soft-shell turtle to dragon and old chicken to phoenix. That's how yongbongtang was given its fancy name. Maybe it started in the kitchen of the royal court as food for stamina for the king and the royal family.

One day, Yongbongtang's recipe spread among the common people, and so yongbongtang became native cuisine in some regions and cities. It requires many expensive ingredients, including carp or softshell turtle, old chicken, abalone, intestine, tenderloin, head of the cow, sea cucumber and more. Typical yongbongtang uses carp and old chicken, but the south-eastern city of Gwangju uses a soft-shell turtle and old chicken.

Its recipe is not complicated. As it's 'soup', you just trim, dress and chop ingredients, then throw them into a big pot to boil for some hours. The challenge is dressing carp or soft-shell turtle, which can be a disgusting process for some people.

Yongbongtang tastes similar to typical Korean chicken soup with the scent of herbs, but it has a thicker and more savory meat and marine flavor. There are not many Korean restaurants that cook yongbongtang, and it's very expensive because carp, soft-shell turtle and abalone are all expensive.

If you are looking for exotic stamina food in Korea, yongbongtang might be a good choice for you :)

[HWPL] HWPL's 18th ~ 20th Peace Tour, Philippines Celebrated Peace & Peace Conference at the United Nations

Mindanao, Philippines, established January 24th as the anniversary of the Mindanao Peace Agreement to commemorate the peaceful settlement of 40 years of conflict through the mediation of HWPL Chairman Man-hee Lee. Locals gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the Peace Monument held in commemoration of the 2nd anniversary of the Declaration of World Peace in Maguindanao, Philippines, on May 25th, 2015.

A peace monument was built to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the Declaration of World Peace on May 25th, 2015 in Maguindanao, Philippines.

18th & 19th Peace Tour

In Mindanao, Philippines, where a 40-year conflict was resolved through the mediation of HWPL Chairman Man-hee Lee and fellow peace advocates, a monument was erected to commemorate this historic event, and 'HWPL Day' was declared.

Earlier, on January 24th 2014, Chairman Lee and peace advocates reached a civil peace agreement to resolve the 40-year conflict in Mindanao, Philippines, which was considered a major conflict zone in Asia. The next day, as a result of peace-building negotiations, the Philippine government and the MILF signed a final peace agreement, and peace in Mindanao was realized through the reconciliation efforts and collaboration between conflicting parties and the private sector.

After this peace agreement, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) drew widespread attention by disposing of their weapons, including heavy weaponry, and held an event to withdraw 145 combatants from Maguindanao, Mindanao.

Archbishop Antonio Ledesma and Chairman Man-Hee Lee promised to collaborate for peace at Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines on May 24th 2015

The MILF had pursued an anti-government armed conflict for over 40 years since the 1970s, resulting in the loss of about 150,000 lives, including government troops, rebels and everyday people. The Philippine government had conducted peace negotiations with the MILF since 1997, but they were cancelled on political grounds.

During the 18th Peace Tour, Maguindanao (Mindanao, Philippines) permanently designated January 24th as ‘HWPL Day’ to commemorate the anniversary. In addition, on May 25th, 2015, the '2nd Anniversary of the Declaration of World Peace' was held at the Buluan Gymnasium in Maguindanao, attended by about 3,000 Muslim and Catholic religious leaders, politicians and military leaders. They pledged to work hard for the development and maintenance of peace and, in commemoration of the peace agreement in Mindanao, created a ‘Peace Park’ and held the ‘Unveiling Ceremony of the Peace Monument’ and the ‘Peace Walk'.

On the 18th Peace Tour, Chairman Lee and peace advocates met politicians, lawyers, soldiers and police representatives in Manila, Maguindanao, Cagayan de Oro and Davao over four nights and five days to advance HWPL's peace movement. They urged for participation in a full-on schedule that included a women's peace agreement ceremony and the 2nd anniversary of the Declaration of World Peace.

The 19th tour that followed also took place in the Philippines.

On July 8th 2015, a special seminar was held by a coalition organization in the Philippines.

Filipino religious leaders invited Chairman Lee to a peace seminar. As an introduction, the group's leader, Maritez Cruz, said, "HWPL's Chairman Man-Hee Lee has traveled the world 18 times across borders, races, religions and ideologies, working for peace." Regarding the achievements of Chairman Lee in the Philippines, he said, “It is very remarkable,” and he issued the following request to guests in attendance, “I ask that you, messengers of peace, descendants of peace, and sons of peace, spread this heavenly culture to people all over the world.”

Chairman Lee took a commemorative photo after signing an agreement with Governor Esmael Mangudadatu of Maguindanao Province on May 25th, 2015

In his introductory speech, Chairman Lee raised the question, “Shouldn’t we all be doing the work of peace that Jesus did?” He also urged participants, “Let us all become messengers of peace and make peace so that God can come and reign.”

Chairman Lee's peace journey in the Philippines was broadcast through the Philippine state broadcaster PTV during his 19th peace tour.

Han-yeol Yoo (28), who had been studying abroad in Mindanao, Philippines since the age of 14, said that he witnessed the fruits of peace achieved by Chairman Lee. Mr. Yoo also vowed, "I will become a messenger of peace as a witness to the Mindanao incident through my study in the Philippines and testify to Chairman Lee's progress."

A ceremony to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the Declaration of World Peace was held at the Buluan Gymnasium with Islamic and Catholic religious leaders, politicians, military and civilians in attendance in Maguindanao, Mindanao, Philippines, on May 25th 2015

20th Peace Tour

The 20th Peace Tour began at the UN headquarters where the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly was held. On September 28th, while the alternative discussion at the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly began, Chairman Man-Hee Lee was invited to the Global Peace Leadership session.

At the conference entitled ‘World Peace: Consultation between Religious Leaders and the Role of Women and Youth’ held in the 3rd meeting room of the UN Headquarters, progress reports were made concerning the peace tour and the World Peace Conference that HWPL had conducted.

At this event, HWPL’s representatives who attended the 2014 World Peace Conference, including Kamal Hossein (former Minister of Justice of Bangladesh), Alvind Bora (Chairman of the North American Jain Association), Princess Maria Torres, and Inderjit Singh (Founder of the South Asian Bar Association) shared their experiences and expressed their support for the peace activities.

After the UN Headquarters meeting on September 29th, 2015, Chairman Lee talked with the former Minister of Justice of Bangladesh Kamal Hossein over an evening meal.

Former Minister of Justice Kamal Hossein introduced the WARP Summit, saying, “There was an event where leaders of different religions, including Catholic priests, Buddhist monks, and Muslim Imams, came together and signed an agreement to become one, recognizing that the core purpose of religion is, ultimately, peace. This meeting is very important at the UN General Assembly because, if conflict continues, sustainable development will never be achieved in the global village.”

In September 2014, Alvind Bora, chairman of the North American Jain Association, who attended the World Peace Conference in Seoul with his wife and fellow Jains, said, “When we first met, I knew that this person was a messenger of peace, and I decided to help with whatever I could.” He expressed the goodwill he received at the WARP Summit and stressed, “we need someone like Mr. Lee who will eliminate the diseases of war and violence in the human world.”

Religious leaders in New York received news of Chairman Lee's visit and invited him to deliver a message of peace. At the Religious Leaders Meeting held at the Trump World Tower on the same day, Chairman Lee emphasized the movement of the World Alliance of Religions' Peace (WARP) Office and urged that religions become one by comparing their scriptures.

On September 28th, 2015, in the 3rd meeting room of the UN Headquarters, a meeting was held under the theme, “World Peace: Consultation between Religious Leaders and the Role of Women and Youth” where HWPL Chairman Man-hee Lee was keynote speaker.

“He has done a very important job in the name of God,” said Inderjit Singh, founder of the South Asian Bar Association. “He is full of courage and insight. I am lucky to meet him.”

Dileepkumar Thankappan, who leads an interreligious movement for world peace, asserted that “Chairman Lee’s teachings should be widely communicated to all countries, religious groups, and people who will achieve a beautiful world of peace.”

Chairman Lee took a commemorative photo after receiving a plaque of appreciation prepared by the Mayor of Mount Vernon, New York, USA on September 30th, 2015. The City of Mount Vernon established September 18th as 'HWPL Day'.

On September 30th, the last day of the 20th peace tour, Chairman Lee and the peace delegation visited Mount Vernon, a residential and urban city in northeastern United States and southeastern New York. A plaque of appreciation prepared by the Mayor of Vernon awaited the delegation.

The then Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis presented a plaque of appreciation to commemorate HWPL's contribution, saying, "The world needs people like Chairman Lee who actively move to achieve peace." In addition, Mayor Davis designated September 18th, the day of the WARP Summit, as 'HWPL Day'.

On September 29th, 2015, Chairman Man-Hee Lee presented HWPL badges to the late Ambassador from Palau to the United Nations Caleb Otto.

[Food] Sundaetguk (Korean Blood Sausage Soup, 순댓국)

 [Food]

[Food] Sundaetguk (Korean Blood Sausage Soup, 순댓국)

Sundaetguk is one of the most typical and familiar foods in Korea; it's cheap and folksy :)
What do men in your country eat when hungry but can't think of a particular dish? Fish and Chips? McDonalds? Meat Pie? Chinese fastfood? In Korea, we just go to any nearby sundaetguk seller :)

Sundaetguk consists of sundae (Korean blood sausage) and pork stock, which are very simple and quick to serve because restaurants usually cook them before they open and just re-heat them before serving. So it's not wrong to say sundaetguk can be considered a Korean-style fast food.

Sundae (Korean blood sausage) had been made with dog's intestines since the 1670s before being gradually substituted to cow's, then pig's, intestine. Today's sundae is all made of pig's intestines. Some sensitive eaters don't eat sundaetguk because 'it smells too much of pig'. Well, I think that's acceptable!

Sundaetguk is a very stodgy food too, since it contains more parts of pork with sundae, which is filled with sweet potato noodle, minced pork, pork's blood and vegetables. Quick, hot, stodgy and cheap - what food it is, isn't it? This is why Korean men (and women) love to eat sundaetguk as a casual meal :)

Moreover, sundaetguk is served with various kinds of kimchi and side dishes that give a tasty kick to enjoy sundaetguk. Sundaetguk soup is very mild and savory, but people pour kimchi's juice into it to give it a spicy and sour kick.

Sundaetguk is also symbolic of hot folksy meal because it can fill your tummy easily. So you can see people eating sundaetguk a lot with soju in many Korean dramas and films. In fact, people usually think of sundaetguk when they are hungry on their way home after a long day's work. Sundaetguk has meat, soup and steamed rice. What more do you need?

If you have the chance to visit a Korean restaurant, try sundaetguk :) This Korean-style meaty soup may give you power for your hard day :)

[HWPL] HWPL's 16th~17th Peace Tour, Everywhere He Went People Shouted "Messenger of Peace Has Come"

[HWPL] HWPL's 16th~17th Peace Tour, Everywhere He Went People Shouted "Messenger of Peace Has Come"

HWPL Chairman Man-hee Lee and the peace advocates held a WARP Summit in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2014, attended by 200,000 people, with people they met during the peace tour. Since then, Chairman Man-hee Lee's peaceful actions have gained more momentum. The photo shows participants holding hands and singing a song after signing the agreement at the World Peace Convention Ceremony held at the United Nations Headquarters on December 4th, 2014. This was recorded as a rare sight at the solemn United Nations Headquarters.

On December 5th, 2014, at the Los Angeles County High Court, Chief Justice David Wesley guided Chairman Man-hee Lee to a judge's seat and handed him a gavel, hoping him to become a judge of the Supreme Court of Heaven.

After the WARP Summit held in Korea on September 18th, 2014, the peace tour of Chairman Man-hee Lee of Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light (HWPL) and the peace advocates blossomed even more spectacularly. The world, who had been skeptical about the achievement of world peace, experienced the reality that it could become one, transcending race, country, and religion, at the WARP Summit, and those who have truly longed for world peace joined hands with HWPL.

In particular, from the 16th to the 20th, peace monuments were erected around the world, and the signing ceremony for peace was more active. Some places have designated HWPL Day to commemorate the day of peace.

The 16th~20th Peace Tour is ▲16th U.S. and India (December 3rd ~ 15th, 2014) ▲South Africa (March 26th ~April 4th 2015) ▲18th Philippines (May 22nd.~May 27th, 2015) ▲19th Philippines (2015 July 7th~9th) ▲The 20th US (2015 September 27th~October 1st).

Chairman Man-Hee Lee is taking a commemorative photo with Jagdishi Gandhi (center) and Bati Gandhi (right) wearing a hanbok (traditional Korean costume), who hosted the Indian Supreme Court Meeting on December 12th, 2014.

16th Peace Tour

Through the 16th Peace Tour, HWPL's Chairman Man-hee Lee led the designation of the 'Day of Heavenly Culture, World Peace and Restoration of Liberation' from Carlson City, California, USA, and received an agreement to enact international law on the cessation of war from 160 Supreme Court justices around the world in India. .

On December 6th, 2014, while on a tour of the United States, Chairman Lee received a declaration from Carlson, California, USA that they would designate May 25th every year as HWPL DAY. This is to commemorate the day when the Declaration of World Peace and Liberation was first published. The news was reported on ABC News, an American broadcaster.

Chairman Lee also met with Chief Judge David S.Wesley and appealed to him to participate in the enactment of international law for world peace.

At the American Peace Conference held at the Carson Community Center in Los Angeles on December 6th, 2014, Los Angeles Mayor Jim Deere established and announced May 25th as HWPL DAY and conferred honorary citizenship and citations to Chairman Man-hee Lee.

Chairman Lee made a keynote speech at the World Peace Convention Ceremony held at the United Nations Headquarters on December 4th. At the meeting, the draft international law for the cessation of war and ways to resolve religious conflicts in conflict zones in Africa were discussed in depth.

Following the United States, on the 14th, India invited Chairman Lee to the 15th International Conference of Supreme Court Justices (ICCJW) held at City Montessori School, and Chairman Lee gave a keynote speech. 160 Supreme Court justices from 43 countries around the world who participated in the international conference all signed the International Law Enactment Convention for the Cessation of War and World Peace, and they were appointed as HWPL International Law Enactment Advisory Committee.

On December 13th, 2014, the Peace Walk was held in India with about 200 attendees of the 15th World Supreme Court Justices Conference and about 2,000 students from City Montessori School (CMS).

Judges who attended the 15th World Supreme Court Justices Conference held at the City Montessori School (CMS) in India on December 14th, 2014 took a commemorative photo.

Chairman Lee said, “The global village is chaotic and unstable, and the country is in the midst of a conflict that divides the country and the ideology. This is because there is no provision of international law to end war and achieve peace in the global village,” he said.

He also urged that "a judge and a former president become one and enact an international law as soon as possible, and if the incumbent president wants world peace and loves the country and people, he/she must sign it."

Hon. Justice Prof. Abdul Salam Azmi, Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of Afghanistan, said, “At this meeting, President Lee's proposal was a practical solution for world peace. Chairman Lee is a person like Gandhi in Korea.”

After the signing ceremony, the City Montessori School held a Peace Walk for World Peace and Cessation of War with about 2,000 students and judges.

On March 28th, 2015, the Kingdom of Bapokeng of South Africa declared May 25th as HWPL DAY, and on this day, Queen Molotreggi of Senema presented a letter of appreciation to Chairman Man-hee Lee.

17th Peace Tour

The results of the 17th peace tour to South Africa can be summarized in two major parts.

The first is the ‘WARP Summit in Africa’. The event was held from March 30th-31st, 2015 at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria, South Africa. The University of South Africa, where the event was held, is also the birthplace of Nobel Peace Prize winners such as Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Frederic Willem de Klerk. The two-day event was attended by 1,500 key locals, and was actively supported by the South African Ministry of Home Affairs, African Youth Union (AYU), South African Religious Commission (NICSA), and African Peace Interfaith Activities (IFAPA).

Prior to this, a festival of peace was held in the Royal Bapokeng Kingdom on March 28th. This country's motto is 'Let there be peace'. At the festival, May 25th is designated as ‘HWPL Day’ every year, and they pledged to hold a peace commemorative event. The unveiling ceremony of the Peace Monument to commemorate the peace achievements of HWPL was also held.

Chairman Lee and Queen Molotreggi of Senema rejoiced as they removed the veil of the monument during the unveiling ceremony of the Bapokeng World Peace Declaration Monument by the Kingdom of Bapokeng in South Africa on March 28th, 2015.

Both of these events drew attention in that they were voluntarily prepared by South African leaders who attended the ‘WARP Summit’ held in Seoul hosted by HWPL in September 2014 to inform their citizens of the purpose and appeal to their participation.

At a press conference on his return home, Chairman Lee Man-hee said, "I was able to confirm the aspiration for peace that former President Mandela had instilled in the people. Not only South Africa but many countries begin to show movements for peace after last WARP Summit" .

Participants at the African Peace Conference at the University of South Africa in Pretoria, South Africa, signed the agreement on March 30th, 2015.

About 1,500 key local officials participated in the African WARP Summit, and the government and major organizations such as the South African Ministry of Home Affairs, African Youth Union (AYU), South African Religious Commission (NICSA), and African Peace and Interfaith Action (IFAPA) actively supported it. Invited speakers include ▲Manamela, Deputy Minister of the Office of the President ▲Malusi Gigaba, Minister of the Interior and supporter of IPYG of South Africa ▲Judge Bess Nkabinde ▲Queen Molotlegi of Bapokeng Kingdom ) ▲ Gandhi's granddaughter, Ms Ela Gahndi

The African WARP Summit held at the University of South Africa in Pretoria, South Africa, on March 30th, 2015.

The person who took the lead in establishing the HWPL Peace Monument in South Africa was Her Majesty Mmemogolo Semane Molot-legi of the Royal Bapokeng Kingdom of South Africa, who visited Seoul in 2014 to attend the WARP Summit.

She presented a letter of appreciation to Chairman Man-Hee Lee, who has made a total of 16 world tours since 2012 for the sake of world peace and end of war. She also signed a 'Peace Agreement' with HWPL's Chairman Man-Hee Lee, and decided to make May 25th the 'HWPL Day' every year.

On March 31st, 2015, SABC in South Africa conducted a special interview with Chairman Man-hee Lee.

Peace!
