[HWPL] Malawi Supports HWPL's DPCW at the National Level

[HWPL] Malawi Supports HWPL's DPCW at the National Level

Chairman ManHee Lee is the head representative of the global peace organization HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light), which is striving for the enactment and implementation of the international peace law 'Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)'. The  DPCW is a legal instrument comprised of 10 articles and 38 clauses that can end wars and hostilities throughout the world. HWPL is also spreading a culture of peace and implementing peace education.

Chairman ManHee Lee experienced the cruelty and tragedy of war as a veteran of the Korean War. This is one of the reasons why he founded a global peace campaign as the head of HWPL. He has traveled the globe more than 35 times to meet and persuade politicians, legal experts, journalists, professors, peace activists, civil organization leaders, heads of tribes and others to unite them for the work of peace. The significant fruits borne out of his hard work are the World Alliance of Religions' Peace (WARP) Summit and HWPL Peace Committee. The DPCW was drafted and finalised by the HWPL Peace Committee.

How, you may wonder, do I know this? About 10 years ago, when I had just been discharged from military service, I came to know HWPL and Chairman ManHee Lee while researching the topic of civil conflicts to satisfy my curiosity in ongoing global issues. At that time, the island of Mindanao in the Philippines was suffering from a major civil conflict that lasted more than 40 years, and Chairman ManHee Lee and HWPL resolved this conflict through non-violent means.

Chairman Lee brought an end to the conflict in Mindanao by holding a peace talk between the warring Catholic and Islamic groups. Before the talk, HWPL and Chairman ManHee Lee held a Peace Walk to spread the culture of peace in Mindanao with the many locals who had gathered out of a desire for peace.

Chairman ManHee Lee's pressing appeal today is that humanity unites for sustainable peace in order to pass on the legacy of peace to future generations worldwide. He doesn't just talk peace, but has worked tirelessly for it through practical peace campaigns for over a decade.

I decided to become a supporter of HWPL and Chairman ManHee Lee's peace initiatives because I also desire a world of peace for all posterity.

Today I'd like to introduce an article from HWPL official homepage regarding HWPL's DPCW in Malawi :)

Members of Parliament (MPs) in Malawi Discuss to support the DPCW at the national level

On November 22, Members of Parliament in Malawi gathered once again at the Malawi National Assembly after the 9th Anniversary of the September 18th HWPL Peace Summit held in South Korea. The purpose was to establish sustainable peace based on the principles of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).

Malawi is a relatively peaceful country, having remained uninvolved in active conflicts since gaining its independence. Nevertheless, the nation faces socio-economic issues that require attention, such as Gender-based Violence (GBV). The event was attended by 10 members of the National Assembly, including Honorable Axson Carlyle Banda, representative of the Speaker of the Malawi National Assembly, and Honorable Ebrahim Abel Kazembe. During the gathering, they deliberated on strategies to make Malawi a more peaceful and joyous nation, drawing inspiration from the 10 Articles and 38 Clauses of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). The objective was to promote universal values within the international community and achieve sustainable peace.

The event commenced with introductions and a welcoming speech delivered by Honorable Ephraim Abel Kayembe. This was followed by an introduction to HWPL peace projects and the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). Subsequently, active discussions were held to work towards establishing sustainable peace in Malawi through the principles outlined in the DPCW.

Honourable Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere, a Member of Parliament, expressed, “I believe it would be beneficial for the government’s national peace policy project in Malawi to collaborate with HWPL’s peace project. It is also advisable to arrange a meeting to discuss this proposal with the Malawi Peace Project Committee.”

During the closing remarks, representing the Speaker’s Office, Honorable Ackson Banda stated: “We express our gratitude to your organization for coming to Malawi to engage Honorable members on matters concerning peace, women, and children. As Members of Parliament, we eagerly anticipate collaborating with you to lend support to the initiatives led by your organization. I am pleased that we had this specific engagement, and we have gained insights from the presentations. We will duly consider and implement the valuable information, as previously emphasized.”

Honorable Members who attended the event proposed the establishment of a high-level working group for peace projects, aligning with HWPL’s peace initiative in Malawi, as a viable solution to address the numerous challenges at the national level. Additionally, six Members of Parliament expressed their support for the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) by signing a letter.

At the 9th Anniversary of the September 18th HWPL Peace Summit, nine African countries, including Malawi, endorsed a Joint Statement committing to collaborative efforts for peace activities in the African region. This commitment was made during the session meeting titled “Strengthening Personal Networking for Institutionalization of Peace and Promotion of Peace Project for Southern African Region.” Subsequently, the Malawi Ministry of Education and the HWPL Department of Peace Education have sustained peace initiatives through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with HWPL.

Discussion on Human Rights and International Conflict

With the Israel-Hamas war still on-going, a small-scale webinar on the discussion about international conflicts and the necessity for the protection of civil human rights under the situation of war was held on November 26th. Participants from West Africa, including Sierra Leone and Gambia; and Asia, including Sri Lanka, were present at the online seminar to discuss a variety of topics related to conflicts among nations.

Mr. Hamiru Harry Massaquoi, Technical Assistant to the Office of the President in Sierra Leone, explained that Sierra Leone and Guinea in West Africa are in territorial conflict and the two are making an effort for the conflict to be settled without the use of force. He stated, “Sierra Leone and Guinea, we have a land border dispute, but we have never gone to war because of that. We believe it is our land, but Guineans are also occupying it. We have never gone to war because of that. Certainly it’s because Sierra Leone and Guinea are poor countries, and the bigger countries like to show their might through warfare. That’s the honest truth.”

Expressing pity for the basic human rights being violated in the Israel-Hamas War, he added, “I think the current situation in the Gaza Strip between Hamas and the Israelis grossly violated almost all the rights that we’ve just mentioned; the civilian rights, particularly those of children and women, have been grossly violated. It’s like at some point, I feel like none of the international laws on human rights have been observed.”

“We have seen how almost all the hospitals in Gaza have been, in one way or the other, destroyed. No electricity, no water supply. People have been starving. The ceasefires are not sufficient because it’s like temporal [sic] measures. So the permanent measure is for the international body to come together and make peace between these two countries in order for them to live amicably. The world is meant to be peaceful. If there is distress or war in any part of the world, it will affect others, either directly or indirectly” said Mr. Ousman Gaku, President of Federation of Gambia Muslim Youths (FEGAMY).

The Hon. Neil Iddawala, judge of the Court of Appeal in Sri Lanka, stressed, “Let us remember that humanity is not solely defined by its moments of darkness but also by its enduring capacity to seek justice, peace, and empathy. By speaking out against these heinous acts and actively working to prevent them, we take a small but significant step towards reclaiming the dignity and moral character of our species.”

Furthermore, it was emphasized at the seminar that a stronger international law and institutional strategy such as the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) is necessary to prevent international conflicts such as the Israel-Hamas war.

Signboard Ceremony of HWPL World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Office, Where Religious Leaders Achieve Peace

On October 30th, 2023 HWPL Global 10 branch held a signboard ceremony for the HWPL World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Office, and also held a WARP Office Comparison of Scriptures in Okcheon Daeyaksasa (Buddhism temple).

The 33 attendees took part in a performance event flying paper planes containing expressions of hope for a peaceful world after the signboard ceremony, shouting “We Are One” together with Ven. Meong An, president of the Yeorae Order of Korean Buddhism.

Ven. Meong An from Daeyaksasa (Buddhism temple) delivered how he felt while participating in the WARP Office Comparison of Scriptures, saying “I had time to remember what I had forgotten through this WARP Office Comparison of Scriptures; the correct understanding of all the words in the Buddhism scripture that talk about peace. I think that HWPL is pursuing peace for the world religions, and the platform to lead this is the WARP Office Comparison of Scriptures.”

In addition, a WARP Office Comparison of Scriptures was held with the theme of “Religion and Peace.” A member of the audience in attendance during this discussion said, “For peace to be realized, the role of the religious leaders is opening their heart and comparing their scriptures through WARP Office Comparison of Scriptures held by HWPL. As a result, they can understand the authentic meaning of religion.” “Peace can be realized as one truth in all the Scriptures”.

HWPL World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Office, which was held in Daeyaksasa (Buddhism temple), will be used as a forum for various exchanges of many religious leaders who love peace, as well as WARP Office Comparison of Scriptures discussions, going forward.

Mindanao Week of Peace: Peace Walk “Peace is Coming Home through Harmony and Solidarity”

Hello, my name is Avon Camille Llanes Colobong and I am the National Coordinator of IPYG Philippines Branch.

On September 9th, 2023, IPYG Philippines Branch held an ‘Inter-religious Youth Peace Camp’ in the Mindanao region of the Philippines, collaborating with 13 local youth organizations. The peace camp has been designed to foster inter-religious understanding and prevent radical extremism through dialogue.

It was such a meaningful event where approximately 100 young adults from religious organizations, universities, NGOs, and even Filipino soldiers attended in hopes of commemorating peace and fostering collaboration in Mindanao, an area that has experienced much pain due to inter-religious conflicts. The event emphasized the idea of ‘youth taking the lead for peace’ and resonating with this, the youth organizations not only joined IPYG but also committed to collaborating as members of the Youth Engagement & Peacebuilding Working Group (YEPW). Since they have gathered together through HWPL, they promised to cultivate peace in Mindanao, aspiring to leave behind a valuable legacy of peace for future generations.

The commitment made by the youth from the 13 organizations under YEPW was soon put into action. On December 2nd, 2023, a peace walk with the theme of ‘Peace Returns Home through Harmony and Solidarity’ took place in Mindanao with over 300 citizens. The 6th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army, in particular, conveyed their desire for all soldiers to love and participate in the work for peace, offering the site of their past military operations as the location for the peace walk.

In fact, the gathering of many citizens and youths in Mindanao to organize a peace event might seem unreal. This event once again proved that Mindanao’s youths can walk the streets safely without fear of gunfire or terror, marking a crucial moment in announcing the establishment of peace in Mindanao. Witnessing every step of these long-dreamt actions turning into reality has been truly moving.

These remarkable events have not only touched my heart but also have been positively transforming the hearts of many Filipino youths. The youth organizations participating in Mindanao’s YEPW are voluntarily becoming a community of young people dedicated to preserving peace in the region, actively planning peace initiatives. This working group, centered around the Kutawato Greenland Initiatives Inc. (KGI), engaged in environmental, human rights, and educational projects within the region, is planning regular activities such as a youth peace basketball tournament to promote peace culture.

As a result of the actions of Chairman Man Hee Lee, the representative of HWPL, complete peace has now come to Mindanao where endless dreadful conflicts and sacrifices once seemed to continue forever. The youths who used to point guns at each other in the midst of war now aspire to nurture peace and collaborate for the development of the local community.

The IPYG branch in the Philippines will continue to expand consistent and diverse initiatives to become a beacon of hope for peace realization in areas suffering from wars. We aim to enable more young people to participate in IPYG peace activities. Your continued support and interest would be greatly appreciated.

Host: HWPL, IPYG, Kenya Model UN

Speakers:

John Green Scott, Secretary General of Kenya Model UN

Yeng Sopheng, Program Manager of Khmer Youth Association Charles Odour, Director of Lubao FM

Thomas Kim, Director of Int’l law Dpt of HWPL 12th Branch

The Webinar was held for the following purposes:

To show the importance of DPCW and peace with the explanation on the relationship between climate change and warfare expense with 2 article of DPCW, War potential

To inform that our small choices and attitudes to climate change can accomplish the peace through the peace education to teenagers and the youth according to 10 article of DPCW, Spreading a culture of peace

To inform that the one of solutions to the climate change is the support DPCW by citizens in Kenya, Uganda, and Cambodia in accordance with SDGs

Introduction Webinar

On June 30th, the webinar under the theme of ‘Climate Change and Our Choice’ was held by international peace NGO, Heavenly Culture World Peace Restoration of Light, IPYG, and Kenya Model UN in order to raise awareness of the climate change in the global society.

Journalists, representatives of NGOs and several figures from IPYG and IWPG sector in Kenya, Uganda, and Cambodia attended and participants shared the current situation and countermeasures against the climate change in each country as an individual, an organization, and a nation. Besides, participants had a time to comprehend DPCW as one of the solutions for the climate change and register HWPL’s membership.

Background Information

According to a report released last April, scientists have analyzed that global warming has made the dry climate conditions in the Horn of Africa region about 100 times more likely. In other words, the severe drought in this region is concluded to be an event that would not have occurred “if there had been no climate change.” The analysis by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) reaches the same conclusion. If there had been no climate change, there would have been no drought in the rural areas of southern Ethiopia, southern Somalia, and eastern Kenya. Joyce Kimutai, a climate scientist at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), explains that the intensity and likelihood of drought are exacerbated mostly by moisture evaporation from the soil and plants, and that the severity and likelihood of drought in the Horn of Africa region have increased “significantly” due to higher temperatures than normal.

Points of discussion

Many countries are experiencing significant damages due to climate change, with a particular emphasis on countries in Africa and Southeast Asia where agriculture is a key industry.

In this webinar, the speakers shared the current situations in each country caused by climate change and discuss the activities undertaken by youth organizations, journalists, and NGOs.

Furthermore, they also discussed the policies implemented by each country in response to climate change.

Additionally, we will explore the relationship between climate change and the DPCW (Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War), which we support. We will examine how conflicts and wars are interconnected with climate change.

The theme of this webinar, “Climate Change, and Our Choices,” highlights the urgency of the situation, as climate change is impacting us directly and will continue to shape our lives based on the choices made by individuals, organizations, and even nations. Please note that the translation may not be exact, but I have tried to capture the essence of your message.

Highlights

John Green Scott: Through such international cooperation, Kenya is enhancing its ability to respond to climate change issues. More cooperation and support are needed, but Kenya is continuously striving to work with the international community. Climate change requires collective action globally, and is particularly concerning in Africa.

Especially, the activities with HWPL is always encourage us and great work. I promise to work together with HWPL like as a co-host in this webinar.

Yeng Sopheng: KYA organize Angkor Youth Camp: Theme “Youth Action for Environmental Protection and Natural Resource Management”

As part of the collaboration with HWPL, KYA is a high commitment to being a part of the initiative on peace and climate change through online and office approaches. In addition, KYA would like to thank the HWPL team who always engaged with KYA in order to raise youth voices and share responsibility for a better human community.

Charles Odour: To address climate change in Kenya, I propose a partnership between HWPL and local communities, government agencies, and NGOs pulling all available resources within our reach and making revert together as a combine force towards Peace and Climate change revolutionarily. Together, we can develop comprehensive climate change education programs that raise awareness and empower individuals to take action. By promoting sustainable practices, advocating for renewable energy adoption, and encouraging nature conservation, we can foster a greener and more resilient Kenya. I think that HWPL, the Kenyan government, civil society, and NGOs should make it together.

Thomas Kim: Conflicts and weapon use have a significant impact on the environment and contribute to climate change, causing serious harm to all living things. To address these issues, the DPCW proposes various solutions, such as building a cooperative platform for sustainable development, using third-party institutions to deal with problems, and promoting peace education and awareness.

Article 2 of DPCW states the agreement on the gradual reduction of arms production. These financial can be distributed to be focused more to benefit for clean environment, leading to better climate.

Article 10 of DPCW states the importance of Peace Education. Climate awareness through the peace education can be implemented to our curriculum by sharing that practicing PEACE will better the CLIMATE.

Suggestions and opinions from the participants

Participants wanted to keep working with HWPL, an international NGO, as well as communities and government agencies. They hoped to be one and make innovative work by having partnership with HWPL.

Results of the event
Overall, participants had an interest in this webinar because they are from different fields and countries. We drew the positive responses from the participants as they could associate the climate change with DPCW and have new perspectives to climate change. We had nice time for additional questions and answers.

Next Steps
We will continue to hold more webinars with diverse topics to deal with social issues in various sectors. And they can be the platform of communication as a practical activity for the peace in Kenya, Uganda and Cambodia. Furthermore, there will be various activities for the peace with HWPL and IPYG.
