[HWPL] HWPL's Cleanup Activity in Korea

[HWPL] HWPL's Cleanup Activity in Korea

Chairman ManHee Lee is the head representative of the global peace organization HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light), which is striving for the enactment and implementation of the international peace law 'Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)'. The  DPCW is a legal instrument comprised of 10 articles and 38 clauses that can end wars and hostilities throughout the world. HWPL is also spreading a culture of peace and implementing peace education.

Chairman ManHee Lee experienced the cruelty and tragedy of war as a veteran of the Korean War. This is one of the reasons why he founded a global peace campaign as the head of HWPL. He has traveled the globe more than 35 times to meet and persuade politicians, legal experts, journalists, professors, peace activists, civil organization leaders, heads of tribes and others to unite them for the work of peace. The significant fruits borne out of his hard work are the World Alliance of Religions' Peace (WARP) Summit and HWPL Peace Committee. The DPCW was drafted and finalised by the HWPL Peace Committee.

How, you may wonder, do I know this? About 10 years ago, when I had just been discharged from military service, I came to know HWPL and Chairman ManHee Lee while researching the topic of civil conflicts to satisfy my curiosity in ongoing global issues. At that time, the island of Mindanao in the Philippines was suffering from a major civil conflict that lasted more than 40 years, and Chairman ManHee Lee and HWPL resolved this conflict through non-violent means.

Chairman Lee brought an end to the conflict in Mindanao by holding a peace talk between the warring Catholic and Islamic groups. Before the talk, HWPL and Chairman ManHee Lee held a Peace Walk to spread the culture of peace in Mindanao with the many locals who had gathered out of a desire for peace.

Chairman ManHee Lee's pressing appeal today is that humanity unites for sustainable peace in order to pass on the legacy of peace to future generations worldwide. He doesn't just talk peace, but has worked tirelessly for it through practical peace campaigns for over a decade.

I decided to become a supporter of HWPL and Chairman ManHee Lee's peace initiatives because I also desire a world of peace for all posterity.

Today I'd like to introduce an article regarding HWPL's Cleanup Activity in Korea

Environmental Cleanup at Bongaksa Temple & Yongwangsan Trail, Mok-dong, Seoul

“A Clean Environment Creates Peace”

On July 20, a group of 25 volunteers from HWPL Global 08 Branch conducted an environmental cleanup activity at Bongaksa Temple and the surrounding Yongwangsan trail in Mok-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. This initiative was organized to help preserve the local cultural heritage and natural environment, while also ensuring that residents can enjoy the area in a more pleasant setting.

The volunteers pulled weeds and leveled the ground in the courtyard and precincts of Bongaksa Temple, collecting fallen leaves and litter throughout the area. A staff member from Bongaksa Temple expressed gratitude, saying, “Thanks to their efforts, visitors can now enjoy a more pleasant environment when coming to the temple for prayer.”

After completing the cleanup at Bongaksa Temple, the volunteers moved on to the Yongwangsan trail, where they collected litter and removed tangled vines. With hidden waste and overgrown weeds cleared from the dense trees and rocky areas, the trail regained its original clean and beautiful environment.

This volunteer effort was more than just a cleanup. It served as a meaningful reminder of the importance of protecting the environment together as a community. A clean environment is the first step towards a peaceful life. The dedication of the volunteers has laid the foundation for citizens to enjoy Mok-dong and Yongwangsan in a safer and more pleasant setting. HWPL Global 08 Branch plans to continue carrying out various activities to protect the community, preserve cultural heritage, and safeguard the environment.

Bemasoandro Cultural Festival: Unity in Diversity, A Celebration of Faith and Peace

On June 21 in Bemasoandro, Madagascar, a special program titled “Unity in Diversity: A Celebration of Faith and Peace” was held alongside the Bemasoandro Cultural Festival. Co-hosted by the city of Bemasoandro, the Islamic organization UMMI (Union Mouballighs Malagasy Ithna-anshari), and HWPL, the event gathered 401 participants.

This was the first time a city-hosted festival highlighted the theme of religious peace, creating a platform for harmony among diverse religions and local communities.

Sheikh Hamed Ibrahim of UMMI Madagascar stated:
“The purpose of this event is connection, mutual understanding, respect, and knowledge-sharing, especially promoting peaceful coexistence among different faiths. We aim to truly understand the meaning of unity in every way. Our goal is to establish peace and security on our island and across the world. To achieve this, we hope many will come to understand the beliefs of others. Let us unite to build a new society—one where peace thrives in diversity, where God’s love reigns, and where tranquility and progress can flourish.”

Community and religious leaders pledged to work together with HWPL for future peace initiatives, with the city of Bemasoandro expressing that HWPL’s presence made a deep and positive impression on the community.

Building on this success, HWPL plans to host additional interfaith peace events in other cities across Madagascar, continuing its efforts to spread a culture of peace rooted in mutual respect and understanding.

Today I'd like to introduce an article regarding HWPL's Peace event on Mandela Day in South Africa

Zinniaville Secondary School Commemorates Mandela Day with Youth Volunteer Activities

In a meaningful two-day program on July 17 and 22, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) organized a youth volunteer initiative at Zinniaville Secondary School in Rustenburg, South Africa, to commemorate Mandela Day.

The initiative formed part of the “Mandela Day Activity,” honoring the life and spirit of Nelson Mandela, who dedicated his life to advancing human rights, freedom, and equality. On the first day, 25 students participated in preparatory activities, while the main event on the second day brought together 1,150 students and staff. This gathering offered students a valuable opportunity to put peace and community spirit into practice within their school and local community.

During the event, students deepened their historical understanding by exploring an exhibition on Mandela’s life. They also created and displayed posters reflecting his values and legacy. In addition, they wrote heartfelt thank-you letters to their teachers and took part in a tree-planting activity to enhance the campus environment—actively demonstrating the values of peace, gratitude, and cooperation.

One student reflected, “Mandela’s journey reminds us that everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are passionate and dedicated about what they do.” Another asked, “As young learners, are we using our freedom to uplift others and remove the barriers that exist for so many?”

Zinniaville Secondary School has expressed its long-term goal of integrating HWPL’s peace education into the regular curriculum, aspiring to serve as a model of peaceful coexistence at both the community and national levels. The school officially recognizes HWPL as an educational partner and commends its peace education for making a tangible contribution to students’ character development and civic awareness. The recent Mandela Day commemoration is considered one of many successful outcomes of Zinniaville Secondary School’s ongoing commitment to peace education.

Today I'd like to introduce an article regarding IPYG's Youth Leaders Peace Conference in Zambia :)

Youth Make the Peace Flow: IPYG Zambia Youth Leaders Peace Conference

Youth leaders of the next generation, aspiring for peace, wave national flags with joy and hope.

Declaration of World Peace, the IPYG Zambia Youth Leaders Peace Conference was held on May 26 at Natatindi Hall in Lusaka, Zambia. The event gathered over 200 youth leaders, civil society organizations, and government officials, marking the official launch of the Zambia Youth Peace Network.

Co-hosted by HWPL, IPYG, and the Lusaka City Council, the conference brought together youth organizations working across diverse sectors including environment, education, civil society, and sustainable peace. Through their encounter with IPYG, participants resonated with the importance of youth-driven peacebuilding and united their voices to set a wave of peace in motion.

Participants pose with placards of the DPCW articles.

Held under the slogan, “Youth Make the Peace Flow,” the highlight of the event was the launch of the Youth Engagement & Peacebuilding Working Group (YEPW). YEPW is a community-based initiative that supports youth in strengthening their peacebuilding capacities and engaging them in ongoing activities. It aims to explore and implement practical solutions to local peace and security challenges and foster peaceful communities through youth participation.

During the conference, 11 new YEPW members were introduced, and more than 50 youth organizations officially became affiliated with IPYG, launching an integrated platform for youth-led peacebuilding.

Senika Banda Cheta, president of the Zango Foundation, delivers her presentation.

Youth representatives gave presentations under the theme, “Why I Chose Peace.” Senika Banda Cheta, president of the Zango Foundation, delivered a speech titled, “Choosing Peace Through Purpose.” She emphasized that volunteering should not be seen merely as service or charity, but as a powerful investment in oneself and a vital process of leadership development.

Simate Simasiku, chairperson of Youth For Peace Zambia, highlighted the importance of humanism, drawing from the philosophy, “I am because we are.” He stated that embracing diversity and building solidarity beyond divisions are central to fostering a culture of peace, and he called on youth to work together for sustainable peace.

Leaders of youth organizations hold up their IPYG affiliation forms together with the “We Are One” gesture.

The program also featured a Unity Board Signing Ceremony, a symbolic expression of the commitment to peace, a campaign involving youth councilors from Lusaka’s 38 wards, cultural performances by youth organizations, and networking sessions where participants collectively designed local peace action plans.

“We would love to see young people flourish in a nation where there is peace and truth,” said Mr. Victor Kagoli, director of the Public Health Department at the Lusaka City Council. “You are a valuable energy toward making Zambia a peaceful country and a beacon of development in Africa.”

At a time when sustainable peace is emerging as a global agenda, Zambian citizens from all walks of life are actively engaging as peace messengers through the Legislate Peace (LP) Program. This conference marked an important step for Zambian youth to take the lead in building a peaceful society, drawing upon their traditions and experiences.

The youth-led wave of peace that began on this day is expected to grow into a greater flow, with more young people across Zambia rising as key actors in community peacebuilding. IPYG will continue expanding partnerships with youth organizations to support this movement.

Today I'd like to introduce an article regarding HWPL's Peace Education event in South Africa :)

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology convened its 2nd Annual Critical Conversation on August 22nd at the Bellville Campus, South Africa, bringing together students, academics, policymakers, and civil society to debate the role of education. The theme was “Beyond Liberation: Is Education a Liberator or an Oppressor in the Struggle for Peace, Gender Equity, and Economic Justice?”

The event coincided with International Youth Day, South Africa’s National Women’s Month, and World Humanitarian Day, adding timeliness and significance to the discussion. It was hosted by the CPUT Central Student Representative Council (CSRC) in collaboration with Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), an international peace organisation, alongside other partners.

Opening the session, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nhlapho gave encouraging words to the students gathered, stating, “Live a life of honesty, of honour and the world around you will thank you.” The CSRC followed by affirming students’ demand for an education system rooted in justice, inclusivity, and care.

Speakers highlighted diverse perspectives on education. HWPL’s Rachael Nyirongo stressed the importance of peace education, stating that, “This is the power of peace education, it changes individuals and changes communities. The question is what kind of society are we building for education to flourish in?”

In a keynote address, Deputy Minister in The Presidency Hon. Nonceba Mhlauli urged a reimagining of education beyond employability. “Education can be a catalyst for transformation in our households and in our communities as well,” she declared, calling for systems that disrupt cycles of violence and exclusion while prioritizing dignity, care, and community.
HWPL played a central role in the collaboration, bringing its international expertise in peace education and grassroots advocacy. The organisation leads the Legislate Peace Campaign, which promotes the adoption of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) - a proposed international legal framework aimed at ending conflict, disarmament, cessation of hostilities, and the protection of religious and ethnic rights.
Through initiatives like peace education programmes and intergenerational dialogues, HWPL works to cultivate youth leadership and foster sustainable, people-centred peace. Its involvement in the Critical Conversation underscored the importance of linking local educational debates with the global movement for justice and peace.

The day’s highlight was a panel discussion titled “Not Yet Uhuru: Decolonizing Education Through Student Activism and Collective Action.” Panelists included Dr. Melanie Swanson (Student Affairs Coordinator in HIV/AIDS), who presented on “Empowering the Forgotten: Rethinking Education to Uplift Women, Youth, and Vulnerable Communities” and Mr. Chumile Samson (South African Youth Council), who spoke on “Youth at the Forefront: Redefining Leadership for Humanitarian and Social Justice.”
Dr. Swanson emphasised the critical role of communication, highlighting its impact across different spheres of student life. She spoke about the importance of personal brand management on social media to enhance employability, and the need to prevent the spread of harmful narratives, likening it to “releasing feathers at the top of a mountain - once scattered, they are nearly impossible to retrieve.” She issued a passionate call to students, declaring “we can do it,” and challenged them to be pioneers not only as future employees but also as business leaders and responsible drivers of societal progress.

Mr. Samson shared a structured framework outlining pillars for a thriving education system, including Capability and Mobility as key drivers. Following challenging questions and remarks from the audience, he expanded on these points, offering practical insights on issues raised during the discussion. He emphasised the importance of strengthening student-led organizations and went further to suggest that institutions and organizations reassess their financial models - even restructuring income sources if necessary - to better support and sustain student-driven initiatives.

As the host institution, CPUT reaffirmed its commitment to being a site of transformation and inclusive dialogue. The university has positioned itself as a platform where students and partners from diverse backgrounds can critically examine pressing social issues while building pathways toward peace, justice, and equality.

Through initiatives like the Critical Conversation series, CPUT continues to play a leadership role in fostering debates that link academia to activism and policy change.

In closing remarks, CSRC representative Aphiwe thanked all participants for joining the event and reminded participants that peace, gender equity, and economic justice are lived experiences, not abstract ideals. The MC shared, “It’s clear that this event has highlighted that the education system has a lot of potential but also still has a lot of problems to overcome.”

The 2nd Critical Conversation concluded with a shared commitment to take insights beyond the campus and into broader partnerships, policymaking, and educational culture, with the aim of advancing justice and unlocking the leadership potential of South Africa’s youth.

【Bengaluru-HWPL】 From August 10 to 11, 2025, a series of peace events organized by the international peace NGO HWPL (Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light) took place in Bengaluru, including activities at the Vidhana Soudha, the Karnataka State Legislative Assembly. The events brought together law professors, Christian leaders, and senior officials from the Karnataka state government, who shared the vision of peace and expressed strong willingness to collaborate.

The first event, the K.H. Patil Law College–HWPL Peace and Legal Exchange Meeting (August 10, morning), featured an introduction to HWPL’s peace initiatives and achievements, followed by discussions on cooperation for the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) and peace education projects. Local faculty members affirmed that HWPL’s efforts are marked by “genuineness and sustainability,” and an official MOU was signed between the two institutions. Former Dean of the Bangalore University Law Department, Dr. V. Sudesh, announced his intention to join HWPL’s activities after retirement, stating, “I wish to contribute to educating the younger generation of India about peace.”

The DPCW (Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War) aims to revive the founding spirit of peace enshrined in the United Nations Charter and to realize sustainable peace by advancing universal values shared across the global community. It outlines practical principles and measures for preventing and resolving conflicts, as well as maintaining a peaceful international order—earning growing attention from civil society and global leaders alike..

On the morning of August 11, the Christian Peace Academy Forum was held under the theme “Be the Light! Healing the Divided World with Christian Love.” More than 80 participants, including religious leaders and citizens, gathered for the forum. Presenters such as Rev. Michael Kim and Dr. Anish K. Joy emphasized interfaith harmony through love and compassion, drawing on biblical teachings. The event included a Peace Pledge Ceremony by religious leaders and an MOU signing with HWPL. Many participants also became HWPL members on site, joining the global peace movement.

That afternoon, a meeting was held at the Karnataka Legislative Assembly with the Minister of Law and the Speaker. Both leaders expressed strong interest in HWPL and the DPCW, stating that they were “already aware and ready to actively cooperate.”

Throughout the events, leaders from Hinduism, Sikhism, Catholicism, Christianity, and sociology experts also gathered to watch a video presentation on the Mindanao peace case, highlighting the importance of continuous interfaith dialogue. Many leaders expressed their commitment to actively participate in HWPL’s initiatives by signing MOUs and registering as members.

These consecutive events demonstrated that India’s legal, religious, and political leaders resonate with HWPL’s vision of peace and are taking concrete steps within their fields to advance it. The outcomes are expected to further accelerate the expansion of HWPL’s international peace initiatives across India.

Today I'd like to introduce an article regarding HWPL's Youth-Led 'Legislate Peace Program' in Sri Lanka :)

On June 21st, the ‘Legislate Peace (LP) Program’ aimed at fostering ethical leadership and civic consciousness among youth was officially launched in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The launch ceremony, held at the National Library in Colombo, was hosted by HWPL and co-organized by the International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) of Sri Lanka, and the state broadcaster ITN.

A total of 116 people attended the event, including government officials, civil society activists, students, and HWPL members. Notably, representatives from key government institutions such as the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, Parliament, and the Presidential Secretariat also participated, expressing their support for the program’s objectives and commitment to collaboration.

The launch ceremony featured a diverse program including: ▲congratulatory remarks by HWPL Sri Lanka Honorary Director ▲video message from HWPL Global Branch 05 Director ▲integrity leadership lecture by CIABOC on ethical leadership and anti-corruption in youth movements ▲presentations by youth education graduates ▲certificate presentation and IPYG service club inauguration ceremony ▲cultural performances ▲closing remarks by IPYG Global Branch 05 Team Leader.

This program was designed to support young people in practicing peace and integrity culture as active members of their communities. The LP program was introduced for the first time in the Gampaha region, beginning comprehensive education to enhance youth leadership and civic consciousness. With the establishment of the IPYG service club, various systematic community activities including environmental cleanup, integrity practice, and peace awareness enhancement are planned to be implemented.

The government institution CIABOC strengthened ethical leadership and anti-corruption education targeting youth to ensure the program’s successful operation. Program participants had opportunities to directly plan and propose creative projects for community development and peace promotion, establishing a practical foundation for youth social participation.

Sampath Arachige, Officer at CIABOC, stated, “We consider it meaningful to participate in this program. We look forward to achieving substantial change through continued cooperation.”

Suranga Ranasinghe, Secretary to the Opposition Leader of the Sri Lankan Parliament, shared his thoughts: “Today’s event was very impressive. I believe positive change in communities is possible with just the energy and resources that young people possess. I was also greatly motivated by peace-related initiatives.”

The Sri Lankan government is currently promoting national reform through the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ policy, focusing on transparent administration and environmental cleanup, with active voluntary participation from youth and civil society. Sri Lanka has also adopted Korea’s Saemaul Undong (New Community Movement) as national policy since 2011, spreading the values of self-help, cooperation, and diligence throughout society.

Building upon this historical and institutional foundation, HWPL operates this program by incorporating the principles of the international peace standard ‘Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War’ (DPCW) to strengthen Sri Lankan youth’s capacity for peace practice. With this launch, youth-led peace activities in Sri Lanka are expected to gain further momentum.
