[Food] Dorumook (Sailfin sandfish, 도루묵)

One day, after a battle with enemies at the border, Yi Sung-gye (1335~1408 A.D.), who was a well-known politician and general in the Goryeo dynasty, was exhausted and famished. He and his army visited a village on the way home, and asked the people of the village to give them some food. As the village was located near the East Sea, the people brought them some fish. Yi Sung-gye found the fish so delicious that he asked them its name, to which the villagers replied, "Mook". Yi Sung-gye thought the fish deserved a better name, so he told the villagers, "From now on, call this fish 'Eun-eo (Silver fish)'".

Decades later, Yi Sung-gye destroyed the Goryeo dynasty and became the founder and first king of the Chosun dynasty. Again, one day, as he sat on his throne, he reminisced about the fish he had eaten on his way home after the fierce battle. He ordered his vassals to bring 'Eun-eo' from the village. However, when he took a bite of well-roasted 'Eun-eo', he was very disappointed with its taste and he said, "Doru 'mook' ira haera (Return it to 'mook')".

Therefore, today, sailfin sandfish is called 'Dorumook' in Korean, meaning 'Returned to mook'. Today 'dorumook' also means 'futile effort', 'back to nothing' or 'useless', which is very obvious when we think of the story of dorumook, which was once-called 'Eun-eo'.

Dorumook is usually eaten in the north-eastern coastal area and Akita prefecture of Japan, and is caught from November to December during Dorumook's spawning season. It tastes very plain and dry, so one can understand why it is called 'sandfish'. Despite the taste of dorumook, some cities in Gangwon province (north-eastern region of South Korea) host a Dorumook festival to attract tourists during the winter. Some people love eating dorumook, though personally I do not like its taste.

Dorumook is usually cooked as a spicy stew or is charcoal-grilled to enjoy its flesh and egg, but it can be fishy and smelly so there are vocal love-hate opinions about dorumook. It's a very cheap and common fish in the Korean winter so it's typical local seafood produce in markets in Gangwon province. If you are a seafood lover, how about sampling charcoal-grilled dorumook? You may just call it 'Eun-eo' as soon as you taste it :)

Emil Constantinescu, Former President of Romania

Stjepan Mesić, Former President of Croatia

"The role of HWPL is important more than ever. HWPL will seek reconciliation (between South and North Korea) through new means. I would highly recommend that the UN General Assembly puts forth the motion to include HWPL’s message for peace on its agenda at least once per year."

Viktor Yushchenko, Former President of Ukraine

"I am sincerely impressed by the depth, simplicity and wisdom of the Declaration on Peace and the Cessation of War. This is a full and measured document that can become the basis for the joint peacemaking of all countries of the world.  Everything is needed for its implementation - the political will of the leaders of the world, the broad support of the citizens of these countries and God's will.”

Pál Shmitt, Former President of Hungary

"I believe that the main purpose of the WARP Summit is peace. There is nothing more important than peace. It is my deepest hope that everyone signs the DPCW so that it becomes adopted (by the UN) at this WARP Summit. We believe that the adoption of DPCW by all countries is the way to achieve the security for the family and peace for the nations."

Rosalia Arteaga, Former President of Ecuador

"The WARP Summit provided a great opportunity for world leaders to share their thoughts. I think it's important to have interreligious dialogue and to work for peace. We firmly believe that we can work together for peace. We will actively cooperate for peace on the Korean peninsula."

Donald Ramotar, Former President of Guyana

"I applaud your determination, efforts and energy in pursuing this dream and making this event possible. In our globalized world, we must build solidarity so that injustice involving racism, tribalism, the caste system and religion is eliminated."

Domitien Ndayizeye, Former President of Burundi

"This innovation created by Chairman Lee is very important because we want to get to the heart of the world's hope: peace. Today, every country in the UN must support the DPCW."

Gennady Bourbulis, Representative of the Baltic Black Sea Forum

"Even the UN today does not function according to the purpose for which it was established. Given this situation, we must actively support the DPCW. I'm confident that this declaration will have an opportunity to be formally presented to the UN General Assembly."

Djoomart Otorbaev, Former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan

"Each forum participant should make the DPCW known to many people around the world and to governments. Then the world will actively discuss peace and bring it to the United Nations, and eventually the DPCW will be adopted as an acceptable international law."

Iakoba Taeia Italeli, Former Governor-General of Tuvalu

"I am very happy to be able to support the DPCW. I believe that the WARP Summit is a truly worthwhile journey to take with people who love peace. We must do our best to support the DPCW."

[HWPL] The 4th Annual Commemoration of the WARP Summit: Global 'Peace Festival' held in Korea

On September 18th 2018, participants took a group photo with flying dove-shaped balloons, symbolising peace, during the 'The 4th Annual Commemoration of the 9.18 WARP Summit' held at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium

“We are here for peace. Through this meeting, I believe that the need for peace and the importance of the DPCW will be proclaimed. The DPCW is very important for world leaders to know.” - H.E. Ivo Josipović, Former President of Croatia

“The topics discussed at the WARP Summit are so important that we want the support of countries and the United Nations.” -Petru Lucinschi, Former President of the Republic of Moldova

The inter-Korean summit was held in Pyongyang on September 18th 2018, when the world's attention was focused on the Korean peninsula. With a heightened atmosphere for peace, the steps of people from all over the world were guided to the Republic of Korea for the cause of world peace.

'The 4th Annual Commemoration of the 9.18 WARP Summit' was hosted by the international peace NGO, 'Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL)' (Chairman Man-Hee Lee) to urge for global support of the 'Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)', which holds the key to the unification of the Korean Peninsula and achievement of world peace. About 600 top-level leaders from 110 countries, including former and incumbent presidents, prime ministers, and government officials, participated in the event to discuss ways of attaining peace, and urged for it.

Man-Hee Lee, Chairman of HWPL, spoke at the 'Global Conference for the UN Adoption of the DPCW', held at Da Vinci Conference Room, Ramada Songdo Hotel, Incheon on September 17th 2018

To commemorate the 4th Annual Commemoration of the WARP Summit, members of the Baltic Black Sea Council, consisting of former and incumbent presidents of Eastern European countries including Poland, Romania and Ukraine, gathered at the HWPL Goseong Peace Conference on September 16th to discuss world peace. HWPL and the Baltic Black Sea Council held the “Goseong Peace Talks” to discuss ways of cooperating for enactment of the DPCW into binding law. As a result, the Goseong Agreement and an MOU were signed. Through this agreement, the two organizations pledged to urge the incumbent presidents of each country to support the DPCW at a national level.

The DPCW stands for the 10 articles and 38 clauses of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War, drafted jointly by HWPL and leading global legal experts. This bill contains content that fundamentally prohibits the act of war.

In addition to the participation of leading global dignitaries, about 2,000 people from the legal, academic, religious, women's and youth sectors took part in the 4th Annual Commemoration on the 17th and 19th of the same month under the theme, 'Collaboration for Peace Development: Building a Peace Community through the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)'. Practical plans for realising peace were secured through open-class discussions.

Members of the HWPL International Law Peace Committee are seated at the ‘6th HWPL International Law Peace Committee Meeting’ held at the HWPL Peace Institution in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi province on September 16th 2018

The ceremonial celebrations of the 4th Annual Commemoration consisted of a large-scale 'peace festival' where people from all over the world gathered and participated. The main event, held at Incheon Asiad Main Stadium, was simultaneously translated into 21 languages and broadcast live from 123 cities and 40 countries, including Korea. In Korea, citizens from 11 major cities including Seoul, where the Declaration of World Peace was first proclaimed, as well as Gwangju, Daegu, Busan and Jeju enthusiastically participated in this movement for peace that was simultaneously broadcast.

At the event, HWPL Chairman Man-Hee Lee declared that the DPCW is “the answer to ending war and achieving peace” and declared, “It will end war in the global village and achieve eternal peace, which will be an eternal legacy for future generations.”

At the 4th Annual Commemoration ceremony of the WARP Summit, former and incumbent presidents from around the world expressed their fervent support for the DPCW and Chairman Lee's movement for peace.

Former Romanian President Emil Constantinescu spoke about Chairman Lee's dedicated world peace activities, saying, "While traveling the world several times, he personally held talks with leaders of each country, religious leaders, university deans, and parliamentarians to conduct cultural diplomacy. It is a great honor to be participating in this process towards such a noble goal.”

On September 16th 2018, the '6th HWPL International Law Peace Committee Meeting' was held with heads of states of Eastern Europe at the Goseong Peace Conference in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi province

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said, "I was deeply impressed to see the DPCW with its refined and profound wisdom." He added, “The declaration contains the content that will be the basis of world peace.” He emphasized, “I believe that peace is approaching everyday due to the indefinite activities of Chairman Man Hee Lee of HWPL and his organization, as well as the genuine desire of millions of people.”

Former President of Guyana, Donald Ramotar said, "For those who live day by day in the midst of war, a life without conflict will be like a dream.”

Religious leaders also took part in Chairman Lee's peace walk at the 4th Annual Commemoration. 260 religious leaders from over 40 countries attended the 'High-Level Religious Leaders’ Conference for Alliance of Religions' at the Ramada Hotel in Songdo, Incheon on the 19th of the same month, where they discussed the role of religion for attaining peace.

Religious people from all over the world entered the stadium during 'The 4th Annual Commemoration of the 9.18 WARP Summit' held at Asiad Main Stadium in Incheon on September 18th 2018

On the same day, the '2018 Conference for the Implementation of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War' was held, where roughly 600 people including global dignitaries, religious leaders, media, and NGO heads of each country filled the conference room with a common goal being the enactment of the DPCW as international law by the international community. It clearly proved to be a topic of discussion.

The former President of Croatia, Stjepan Mesić, delivered a speech, saying, "The role of HWPL is more important today than ever.”

At the '2018 Worldwide Women’s Peace Conference' hosted by International Women's Peace Group (IWPG) at the Ramada Hotel in Songdo, Incheon, the 'IWPG First Ladies' Peace Network' campaign was launched to urge the 3.6 billion women of the global village to work towards a world of peace. About 400 women leaders of all nationalities and ethnicities gathered at the conference.

Former First Lady of Croatia, Tatjana Josipović, said, “The DPCW was drafted by prominent international law experts and published in the Republic of Korea, and is supported by leaders around the world. If the DPCW can be recognized as an internationally binding law, then new ethics order will be established between international law and a country.”

On September 18th 2018, at the Renoir Hall in Ramada Songdo Hotel in Incheon, the 'HWPL Peace Advisory Council Conference for the Realization of Peace’ was held with legal experts to discuss ways of achieving world peace

Journalists also joined in Chairman Lee's movement for world peace. In particular, at the ‘2nd Conference for Global Peace Media Network’, held at Ramada Hotel in Songdo, Incheon on the 19th, an MOU signing ceremony (business agreement) was held between Chairman Lee and 13 media companies from countries including Nigeria, Myanmar and Rwanda.

The MOU includes ▲establishing a platform to supply and share peace-related news with the world ▲international cooperation to increase public awareness of peace ▲understanding of the purpose of the media ▲dissemination of content about peace, rather than conflict ▲formation of a peace press, and more.

Chairman Lee said, “No power or material possession can become a legacy for the next generation. We must create a world of freedom, peace and love without war, and make it an eternal legacy for our descendants."  He emphasized, “Everyone in the global village must come together for peace, which is impossible without the media. Journalists should frequently report on the work of peace and usher in a new era of world peace.”

[Food] Maneul Chicken (Deep Fried Chicken with Garlic Sauce, 마늘치킨)

[Food] Maneul Chicken (Deep Fried Chicken with Garlic Sauce, 마늘치킨)

Chicken has formed part of the human diet since ancient times, and it has been deep fried since the medieval age in many regions around the world. Today's deep fried chicken cuisine originates from the United States and flowed into South Korea in the 1980s. The first deep fried chicken restaurant in Korea opened in Seoul. Since then, deep fried chicken restaurants have sprung up like mushrooms.

Koreans have now created their own style of deep fried chicken with one of them called Maneul (Deep fried chicken with garlic sauce, 마늘치킨). Koreans love garlic (which itself forms part of Korea's creation myth), putting garlic into most Korean cuisine. As such, it's clear that Koreans invented maneul chicken in 1980s Seoul.

One of the oldest deep fried chicken eateries in South Korea, located in Banpo-dong, Seoul.

Deep fried garlic, vegetable and chicken

Garlic sauce tastes sweet, savory (umami) and piquant, and when deep fried chicken is smothered in garlic sauce, it removes its oily taste and the smell of deep fried chicken, giving it a fabulous taste with crispy chicken :)

Even if you are not a fan of garlic, you might just change your mind after tasting this garlic sauce. The balanced and harmonized sweet and piquant taste of garlic goes so well with deep fried chicken. Deep fried garlic makes for unique gourmet, too :)

If you have a Korean eatery nearby, how about savoring some deep fried chicken tonight? It will never fail you :)

Remarks and congratulatory messages by guest speakers, who unanimously proclaimed “Now is the time to end war and achieve peace”, are summarized herein.

H.E. Ivo Josipović, Former President of Croatia

"We are honoring the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), which is a legal tool for achieving peace. The declaration, which was created through the hard work of Chairman Lee and several legal experts, brought hope and light. Reading the proclamation and seeing the determination to achieve peace gives me hope that this goal will be achieved."

Former President of Tunisia, Moncef Marzouki

"In these conditions of fragile peace and terrible wars, the permanent effort for peace must be continuous and mobilize all goodwill in the world. It is for this reason that the meaning of the WARP Summit is even greater and the role of this organization is also the same. I am convinced that the WARP Summit will maximize the effectiveness of peace activities by connecting all peace activists."

Former President of the Republic of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga

"I think the key message of this WARP Summit and that peace is important and should be global importance is timely. I am certain that the value of this peace movement will never disappear."

Stanislav Shushkevich, former Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus

"I think that the beginning of the world alliance of religions' peace is Seoul, which has continued to make groundbreaking work. I believe this is symbolic and appropriate. Let's work together so that all the plans of HWPL can be implemented in order to achieve peace by encouraging the determination of leaders in each field, including society and religion, based on the high-quality WARP Summit"

Adrien Houngbédji, former President of the National Assembly of Benin

"The WARP Summit is sounding the alarm around the world in a timely manner at this point. I realized that the diversity of the participants of the WARP Summit is an important asset for realizing world peace and the end of war."

Given Lubinda, former Minister of the Ministry of Justice of Zambia

"We express our full support of Zambia for HWPL's commitment to world peace. We have a mission to widely publicize the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). Peace for all can be achieved if we, who attended the WARP Summit, ourselves connect more people to this peace network."

Sarathi Dushmantha Mithrapala, Member of Parliament of Sri Lanka

"Conflict resolution cannot be achieved without preventing the spread of the nuclear crisis, and sustainable development cannot be achieved without realizing peace. I believe that the DPCW plays a very important role in world peace. Political leaders and civil society must work together to deliver a world of peace to future generations."

Giani Gurbachan Singh, former Head Granthi (Sikh priest) of the Golden Temple

"It's amazing how different people from different backgrounds can come together for several days to discuss and share ideas on the topic of peace. I urge everyone here and members of the international community to resolve and work together for peace. Let's work together to create a sustainable peace and pass it on to future generations."

Almas Jiwani, President of Emeritus UN Women Canada NC

"Although we work with numerous peace organizations around the world, HWPL is the only peace organization in the world that works only for the purpose of peace, not money or government support. A strong light comes from the eyes of Chairman Lee who leads HWPL, and I can feel the angels working with him together."

César Coronel Garcés, Reporter for Ecuador Plan V Radio

"Global peace can be divided into pre and post-HWPL. Before HWPL, everyone talked only about war, and the media only reported war. However, since HWPL's peace movement began in earnest, people around the world began to rethink and speak about the importance of peace. HWPL is a peace organization that has awakened in mankind the importance of peace."

[Food] Gamgyul (Seedless Mandarine, 감귤)

 [Food]

[Food] Gamgyul (Mandarine, 감귤)

Gamgyul (Seedless mandarin, 감귤) is one of the most typical and popular fruits in Korea with a sour and sweet taste and as large as the size of half a fist :)

Korea's Jeju Island is the biggest production site of gamgyul because the temperature in Jeju Island does not fall under freezing, even in winter, providing the best climate for gamgyul to thrive in a warm climate. Jeju Island has produced gamgyul for the last 1000 years, but today's gamgyul crop originates from Japan and has been farmed for 1000 years.

Doctors say that gamgyul's vitamin P content enhances vascular health, which also gives beautiful skin. Gamgyul is also helpful for the maintenance of one's memory and cognition, and for the prevention of constipation :)

However, too much gamgyul can turn one's skin color yellow and also increase blood sugar levels. You have been warned :) Its sweetness is addictive.

In any case, owing to the mass production of gamgyul on Jeju Island, it is a very cheap fruit that can be found in any market in Korea :) It's usually harvested in the autumn, so people usually eat gamgyul in the winter as a snack or a dessert. There is one special feature about Korean mandarin, compared to mandarins anywhere else - the Korean mandarin does not have a hard seed :) This makes it very convenient to eat.

The popularity of gamgyul in Korea has ignited the invention of many gamgyul products such as tart, chocolate, jelly, juice, makgeolli (Korean rice wine) and even whisky :)

Visit any Korean friend in the winter and I'm certain you'll both be eating gamgyul with them as you chatter away :)

And we have to make them make a major contribution to the agendas of the WARP Summit."
