[HWPL] HWPL's Statement Regarding Chairperson Man-hee Lee's Detention
HWPL's Statement Regarding Chairperson Man-hee Lee's Detention
[Statement]
We Urge a Fair and Neutral Investigation of Chairman Man-Hee Lee, and Adherence to the Principle of Investigation Without Detention
Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), a non-governmental organization, is registered with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). In particular, the mediation of the conflict in Mindanao, Philippines, led by Chairman Man-Hee Lee, is a prominent case that brought about a peace agreement between Catholic and Islamic leaders. Its meaningful contribution to the international community has been recognized, leading to the local commemoration of "HWPL Peace Day."
Our organization trusts the independence and fairness of the judiciary of the Republic of Korea. However, as the Criminal Procedure Act prescribes investigation and trial without detention as a fundamental principle, the repeated search and seizures have already secured sufficient evidence, leaving no risk of destruction of evidence. Furthermore, at the advanced age of 95, there is virtually no risk of flight. Therefore, the detention of Chairman Lee should be revoked, and the investigation and trial procedures should proceed under non-detention status.
In addition, we request that the investigation be conducted fairly and neutrally, based strictly on facts and evidence rather than public opinion or prejudice. We also call for humanitarian measures and the protection of his right to defense, considering Chairman Lee's age and health conditions, which require continuous medical support.
